Berkeley Unified School District

(posted Jan. 17, 1999)  The Berkeley (California) Unified School District has dropped the instruction "Choose One" on the "Student's Ethnicity" box on its enrollment forms for 1999, becoming one of the first agencies of government to come into compliance with the new OMB Statistical Directive 15.

 The categories which appear in this box are

1. White, not of Hispanic origin,
2. African American, not of Hispanic origin,
3. Asian or Pacific Islander,
4. Hispanic,
5. American Indian or Alaskan Native,
6. Filipino, and
7. Interracial.

The category "Interracial" has appeared on Berkeley schools forms since about 1980 when it was added due to the efforts of AMEA's local affiliate I-Pride.
